Nahmanides (Bonastruc de Porta; Moses ben Nahman; Ramban)

Nahmanides (Bonastruc de Porta; Moses ben Nahman; Ramban)
(1194-1270)
Spanish talmudist, kabbalist and biblical commentator. He is commonly known by the name Nahmanides, though his Hebrew name was Moses ben Nahman and his Spanish name Bonastruc de Porta; the name Ramban is derived from the title Rabbi Moses ben Nahman. He served as rabbi of Gerona. In 1263 he was challenged by Pablo Christiani to a religious disputation, which took place in Barcelona in the presence of King James I (1213-76). Later he was tried for blasphemy and forced to leave Spain. From 1267 he lived in Palestine, settling in Acre. Nahmanides was regarded as the foremost Spanish talmudist of his day. Among his works are Torat ha-Adam which deals with the rites of mourning, and popular Bible commentary.
